The Wheel of Life: A Starting Point for Reflection

Updated: May 3

What does this exercise offer us?

The Wheel of Life serves as a practical assessment tool that helps us visualize, assess, and commit to the various aspects of our lives that require attention to achieve balance.

What steps should we take to implement it?

1.- IDENTIFY THE AREAS OF YOUR LIFE: These areas can be seen as the foundational elements that shape your identity regarding who you are, what you possess, and what you are capable of. They represent the traits, behaviors, and habits that set you apart.

Areas

  • Academic: Pertains to all activities related to educational development through schooling.

  • Learning: Encompasses everything one does for making a living or preparing for it.

  • Spiritual: Relates to the search for meaning and purpose in life through religion or personal beliefs.

  • Financial (work): Involves managing your finances, possessions, and expenditures.

  • Health (physical and emotional): Reflects your overall health, influenced by nutrition, fitness, mental state, and exercise.

  • Personal (family): Concerns personal and family relationships based on support, communication, and living conditions.

  • Leisure and Recreation: Involves how you utilize your free time and engage in hobbies.

“If you think of another category, feel free to add it.”

“Make sure to break down your areas into subtopics.” For example: learning - self-directed - personal growth - life lessons.

2.- ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SUCCESSES AND FAILURES: Create a circle dividing each of your areas and assign a rating to each topic based on your perspective, considering whether you met your goals.

This self-reflection is not meant for making excuses but rather for holding ourselves accountable for growth and improvement.

It’s advisable to maintain a journal to record your mistakes and lessons learned each day, noting the error, the lesson, the date, and the solution to avoid repeating the same mistake and reinforce your learning.

3.- REFLECT: To better understand what you need to enhance or modify, consider these questions:

How closely do my actions align with my goals in each life area?

Am I investing time and energy in what is truly important to me?

Can I conclude that my actions are on the right track, even if I haven’t reached my goal?

Keep in mind: Your emotional and physical health should be your priority! If you haven't achieved your goal but your commitment and resilience remain strong, there’s no need to feel discouraged. As mentioned earlier, our purpose is to “LEARN” rather than to “BE PERFECT.” We should investigate where we went wrong and how we can improve.

The next step to ensure a successful year is to recognize a situational value that helps you understand your origins and your direction.
